Now that we are experiencing another war in the Middle East, it seems likely that the price of oil will continue to rise. This translates into many Australians paying more at the fuel pump, and this is why it is important that you do whatever you can to reduce your overall vehicle fuel consumption. It is going to cost quite a bit more to fill the tank in your car or truck if the conflict continues for longer than a few months.
It makes sense to store additional fuel, in case the price gets out of hand, and it would be an excellent idea to invest in a jerry can holder or three, to make sure that you never run out and that you’re never paying more than you should. The following are some of the top ways to help you reduce your fuel consumption when driving your vehicle.
- Maintain your tyre air pressure – This is frequently overlooked by many car owners here in Australia, and it is something that can be checked very easily. If you’re not sure how much air to put into the tyre, there’s usually an indicator on the wall of the tyre, and you can find an indicator on the inside of your driver’s door. If there isn’t enough air, there is more resistance on the road, and your vehicle uses more fuel.
- Empty out the boot – You need to think of the last time you went to the boot, and actually had a look to see what is in there. Only carry your golf clubs when you’re actually intending to play a round. For other times, keep the golfclubs and any other sporting equipment in your house. The more additional weight in your boot that you don’t need, contributes to more fuel consumption.
- Use your air conditioner – Contrary to what many Australians believe, winding down your windows to cool down instead of putting on your air conditioner is actually costing you more money. You are creating a drag effect, and more wind resistance is experienced once the windows are down.
- Stay within speed limits –There are two ways to look at this, and one of them is that you shouldn’t be driving too fast, nor should you be driving too slow. Try to keep your speed steady on main highways, and remember that doing 100 km an hour and 125 km an hour is the difference between using less fuel or more.
- Steady acceleration is the key – You aren’t a young man or woman anymore, so there is no need to rev your engine at the traffic lights. Don’t tryto race an electric car just because you feel that you need to make a point. When accelerating away from traffic lights, slow and steady wins the race and also uses less fuel. The same applies when you are braking, and avoid pushing down on your brakes too hard whenever possible.
- Try to predict what lies ahead –It can be pretty easy to predict what people are going to do at any given time, and this is a driving habit that you should get yourself into. By predicting what people are going to do over time, you end up not having to bring your car to a complete standstill. Every time that you do that, you use more fuel going up through the gears again to get to the speed that you want to be driving at.
Follow these six rules, and there’s no reason why you can’t save fuel today, tomorrow and always.
